The Mare Nostrum was the first chronograph in the history of Panerai . Its origins are not entirely clear, although according to several historians, the first prototypes appeared in 1943. And they were intended for deck officers of the Royal Italian Navy, although they never reached the production stage.
Now in 2017 Panerai released a limited edition of 1000 pieces. which can clearly be seen a reference to the chronograph Mare Nostrum ref. 5218-301 A released in 1993. The new watch comes in a wooden box, which also includes a screwdriver, removable leather strap and a miniature replica of the Italian destroyers like “Luigi Durand de la Penne.
The Panerai Mare Nostrum Chronograph PAM716 will be housed in 42mm diameter case made out of brushed steel and will boast a power reserve of 42 hours from the OP XXXIII caliber movement. The timepiece is equipped with a tachymeter as a mapping unit for speed along with radium filled watch hands for viewing the time in low light conditions.
