Grand Seiko was born in 1960 at their Suwa Seikosha factory in central Japan. Caliber 3180 was the first Chronometer grade watch manufactured in Japan. In keeping with the team’s ambition and desire to create the “king” of watches, it was named Grand Seiko. It had a level of accuracy equivalent to the superior grade of the recognized chronometer standard at the time and it marked the first step on a sixty year journey towards the summit of the watchmaking art.
2020 is the 60th anniversary of the epic achievement which also has a great significance in Japanese culture, Kanreki literally means “return and “calendar”. The meaning literally gives sense to the occasion. The 60th year marks the end of one cycle in zodiac calendar. That means returning to your birth year, and beginning a new cycle.
